IDYLLIC SETTING IN THE ESSEX COUNTRYSIDE
The Channels Estate is host to two of the finest wedding venues in Essex; their traditional venue at Channels the Essex Barn and our intimate wedding venue at Little Channels the Courtyard Suite.
Set in the heart of the beautiful Essex countryside, the four star awarded Channels Lodge was originally a 15th century Tudor farmhouse and family home. The current owners lived in the house until 1996, then applied for planning permission to turn it into a six bedroom lodge. The house was tastefully converted while maintaining the character and links to its history, each room is individually decorated to the very highest level, boasting its own style and charm. Over the following two years the farm outbuildings and cart lodges around the courtyard were converted into further executive rooms and suites. The Lodge now consists of two honeymoon suites, three more luxury suites and nine executive rooms, to give a total of 17 beautifully spacious rooms for guests to enjoy.
The Lodge is an ideal base for business guests working in the South East, a retreat for couples seeking a romantic weekend break, a great centre for people looking for a horse racing break with racing at nearby Chelmsford City Racecourse or an ideal base for wedding guests with the superb Essex Barn wedding venue on site. Although set in an idylic, peaceful location Channels Lodge is only a short 10 minute drive from the centre of Chelmsford with direct train links to London, superb road links to the M11 and only a 30 minute drive to Stansted Airport, so perfect for an overnight stop before an early flight.
We stayed in the Birch Suite and what a suite it is! I’ve never stayed in such luxury settings in Essex before, and doubt it could ever be topped. From the chandelier hanging over the giant faux fur clad bed to the Robins in the tree outside of the window in your private garden.
It is extremely private with its own staircase leading to the landing with a hallway separating the bedroom and bathroom. Both the Suite and bathroom have high vaulted ceilings with exposed Tudor beams. The bedroom overlooks the gardens apple tree. It has a small dining table with two chairs, useful for work or for private dining.
The bathroom oozes elegance and character. A free standing roll top bath on pebbles with views of the golf course through the wooden heart shutters. The china porcelain has white and blue flowers on. I seldom take a bath but upon seeing this bathroom you can’t not take a bath here.
EAT & DRINK
Channels Bar & Brasserie Brasserie has recently been fully refurbed, to create a new destination bar & restaurant for Chelmsford. Their new menus focus on British fusion, quality sourced ingredients, with plenty of gluten free and healthy options. Seasonal special boards in the Brasserie are regularly updated, so there is always something new to try. New in the Brasserie for Spring 2017 is the bottomless Brunch menu.
The menu on offer at Channels is truly exceptional, the whole experience of the kitchen and attitude of the wait staff make it such a great pleasure to be there.
Both bars & restaurants have ample free parking, free wifi and are situated just 10 minutes from Chelmsford City Centre in the beautiful countryside. We actually opted to take a walk from Chelmsford station and had a wander through the golf course.
It gets a little confusing when opting to eat as there seems to be a clear divide between the restaurant and the lodge, you’ll notice the car park is literally split in half by a fence making it apparent they’re separated.
